The Problem

In the face of COVID-19, the U.S. failed to reliably compile even the most basic information caregivers and public

health officials required to inform an effective response. Ongoing struggles with interoperability and data standardization created a crisis that dogged the nation’s pandemic response from its earliest stages. Of the many critical lessons learned from the nation’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most significant is this: fixing the healthcare system by enabling broad adoption of precision health must be a priority.

The Solution

In just three months’ time, hc1 established a Precision Health Insight Network (PHIN) to securely ingest, organize, and normalize millions of lab test results from more than 20,000 ordering lab locations. Using multiple testing vendors with differing test compendiums for new and evolving COVID-19 viral and antibody lab tests, this PHIN powered local COVID-19 risk models that predicted and visualized hot spots around the country and served as early warning systems for local areas and ultimately powered a safe return-to-work solution.

A way to understand COVID-19 at a local level

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, hc1 created CV19Dashboard.org to provide hyperlocal insights into COVID-19 testing rates, positivity rates, viral and antibody testing, and risk of increasing viral activity for public health, public policy, healthcare, and laboratory decision-makers.

From March 2020 through December 2022, the Dashboard was provided by hc1 and a group of lab coalition partners at no charge, so that everyone could access free, hyperlocal, timely CV19 Lab Testing insights.
